Still Rockin' after all these years...

Hi, I'm Dave Poore. I've been playing drums since 1982, though I got my start in music by taking private lessons on the trumpet for 4 years prior to playing the drums. In high school, I was in a band called Pranxter. We played a lot of classic rock and Grateful Dead songs. The guitarist/singer was a great musical influence on me. Shortly after high school, I did the family thing for the next 20 years. I raised a really great kid, and although I practiced a fair amount during that time, it's finally time to work diligently toward my musical future. I never lost the desire or the passion for music. Hence the name StillRocks.com!

I've been influenced by many types of music: Classical, Jazz, Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Southern Rock, Heavy Metal, Psychedelic Rock. More specifically, legendary bands like Led Zeppelin, Rush, Grateful Dead, Black Sabbath to name just a few.

In 2005, I did some work in a studio with a band called Metal Sky Craz. They had a few good original songs and a very rockin' sound.

In early 2010, I began studying with Stephen Flinn, one of the best drum instructors out there. He not only knows how to teach, he also knows what to teach...and in what order to teach it all, since he studied with some of the greatest drummers and instructors of our time. You can check him out at Phoenix Drum School or Special Needs Music

Within a few months of starting the lessons, I played White Room (by Cream) on stage as a guest drummer with a classic rock cover band at an event in Flagstaff, AZ. I had the time of my life. And the crowd seemed to love it. So I knew I was finally on my way.

Then I met a guitarist/singer/songwriter who has some great originals and decades of experience in studio and live performance. I've been working with him since June, 2011 in our new band, Local Krew. We have played open mic nights a few times, and hope to get some paying gigs in the near future. Update: Although there were many great memories, I have moved on from this band.

In March, 2012, I began working with Los Pinkeye, a local band that has been together for about 3 years. We have a good rockin' sound. We played at the Tempe Festival of the Arts in support of the Chicks with Picks organization, as well as a few other really great gigs like the shows we did at the Hard Rock Cafe in Phoenix. Our CD titled It's Ridiculous is now complete.

I saw Jerome Teasley at a few of the open mic sessions around town. He's a great drummer who has history with Jimi Hendrix, Wilson Pickett, Tina Turner, Sly and the Family Stone and many other legendary acts. Jerome has since passed away. RIP, good friend.

In February 2013, I began working with Uncle Click and playing some gigs around Arizona. We play classic rock, blues and southern rock but it's also my first experience with country music.

I took a lesson from AD Adams. I learned a lot from just one lesson. I wish I had more time to devote to furthering my drum education with AD, but I'm just too busy with my current bands to make it happen at this point in time.

A while back, Steve Negus, original drummer from Saga, was in town staying with a friend of mine. I hung out with him for a while and invited him to open mic night at Pappy's, where he really amazed the crowd.

I've been sitting in with The Krimson Chord on occasion when their drummer can't make it. They are a well established local blues band and a lot of fun to work with. They sometimes run an open mic jam which I have attended many times.

As of May, 2015, I'm still playing with Los Pinkeye and Uncle Click and have just joined Hippie Gold, a new hippie tribute band that is forming. We will be playing top hits from 1965 to 1975. There are some great musicians in the band, including members from This Ain't LA and Swain's World.

In October 2015, I began playing gigs with Swain's World. (Update: In mid-2018, this band changed its lineup. I may still fill in when their drummer can't make it if I'm not already booked with another band.)

It's now May of 2016 and I'm about to play my debut gig with Hippie Gold Tribute Band! It's a tribute band unlike any other. Rather than paying tribute to a single band, we are a tribute to an entire decade...playing many top hits from 1965-1975. You'll get to see us perform music from artists such as: Mamas and Papas, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Buffalo Springfield, The Monkees, The Rascals, Linda Ronstadt, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Grass Roots, The Animals, America, Carole King, The Byrds, The Band, The Association, The Turtles...and MANY others!

As of August of 2016, I'm moving on from playing with Uncle Click to further pursue a future with the other bands I'm with. Uncle Click gave me some great experience and fond memories, but as with everything in life, all good things must eventually end.

In December of 2016, I started filling in for a drummer who was tied up playing with the Phoenix Symphony. Before long, I became the band's full-time drummer. The band, Tabu, plays pop, rock, dance & soul. As of April, 2017, we have played 5 or 10 shows together and are looking forward to many more in the future. UPDATE: It's April 2018 and, although Tabu had a lot of momentum, and had even played a great performance at the KDKB Battle of the Cover Bands, the band did not last. However...

Around the beginning of 2018, I began filling in for the drummer for JT's Caravan. They're an exceptional variety band overflowing with talent. It's a pleasure to play with musicians of this caliber! It's now May, 2018 and I have a number of gigs lined up with JT's. It's a lot of fun and we play at some very nice places.

It's September, 2018 and some of the old members from Swainsworld are forming a new band called Dr. Suzie and the Pulse. We have a few gigs lined up already. This band has a lot of great talent, so we'll be able to play songs that a lot of other bands wouldn't even try. Update: Unfortunately, this band didn't last very long.

March 13, 2020, I played my last gig before the pandemic shutdown. I went a year and a half without playing any gigs. Then I played two gigs in two nights in November 2021! These were played with Outside The Line. The band has some very talented people, but after a few gigs together, we had to admit that musically we weren't the right fit for each other.

January 2022, I'm learning some material in order to work with Splash. I feel good about this band working out for the future, as they are a very busy band. Stay tuned!
Update: I'm still with Splash after a year and 50 or 60 gigs!

Here's my current drum kit, made by Masters of Maple. They don't seem to have a traditional website, but you can find them on Tumblr.
